Un Celacanto nel Golfo del Messico?

La domanda potrà forse sembrare campata in aria (o meglio in acqua!), ma per caso qualcuno ha notize "fresche" riguardo la possibile presenza di una specie di celacanto nel Golfo del Messico?

Io sono rimasto a quanto riportato nella pagina seguente, datata 31 dicembre 1998:

All'epoca il Celacanto bruno di Sulawesi (Latimeria menadoensis) era stato appena scoperto e non ancora formalmente descritto...

Da quanto ne so si è trattato o di una frode bella e buona o del classico scambiar lucciole per lanterne: le statuette in questione erano state prodotte negli anni '50 usando i celacanti delle Comore come modello.
