early july 2014 while longlining for western gulf black cod (sable fish) in alaska,myself my captain and crew mate seen this creature. didnt even know anything about a sea ape until now 6 months later i google it'. we departed sand point AK.witch is in the Shumigan islands. just past the Alaska penensula and start of the alutian chain. heading SW a good 18-20 hour run to the Davidson bank to hook these elusive fish. black cod like to hang out on the muddy steep banks of the alutian trench. its common to find them 600 fathoms deep. 60 to 100 miles off shore there is ALWAYS a swell. tides and currents is always big factor.no place to hide on anchor.pick the right tides and work through it 5-10 day trips. we have spent days and days looking for our gear out there. lots of lost gear gone to the abyss. or find it months later when it pops up. anyhow on this day,with a very exspeiraned crew,70 plus years the three of us.it was flat calm,glassy,sunny and unlimited visibility. skipper was sounding some ground and us deckhands spend all day on deck baiting hooks and getting ready for what we know all to well ,the very long and hard western gulf trips. late afternoon us three on deck enjoying the strange calmness of the sea. we spotted what looked like a deadheaded log about 400 yards off starboard bow. at first we all agreed yea its a deadhead,but it was out of the water 4-5 feet. so capt. said lets check it out and took over driving the boat from on deck. as we aproched aproximitley 100 yards the outline came into view. the back of a torso and the head coming to a point. 20 yards away capt cuts power and we drift up close. we are still saying its a deadhead when the top of its pointy head flops over and moving back and forth showing a side view. then this creature turned showed his face and silver underbelly layed back and slunk in the water without a ripple. we stayed there a good 2 hours on deck dumbfounded and searching for it to surface. as we were recounting what we seen.the other deckhand said it looked like Harry and the Hendersons from a bigfoot movie spoof,very large black eyes,like it had goggles on.and a big harry mupett mouth,i could only exsplain it was a water breathing mammal. because it never came back up. i called it a sea beaver and that name stuck with us.capt said it was a walrus or sea lion but that far offshore and not surfacing? this sea beaver was bigger and had the bust of a 7 foot man that could stand out of the water from his naval, with broad shoulders and biceips with realy long forarm filpers with lots of hair. that day i was convinced we seen a mythical being..something that does not exsist. back in town at the bar over many beers we didnt talk about to anyone cause it sounded stupid or we were on drugs or drunk.we were 4 safe ,sane, sober alaska hardcore fisherman....and this is no bullshit
